Integrating with Atlassian JIRA

Atlassian JIRA is a widely used issue management system with various uses. It is commonly used for issue tracking and often also used for agile project management and requirement specification related tasks.

Meliora Testlab can be integrated with JIRA with various strategies and for various uses. In addition, run time environments of Atlassian might differ a bit (especially JIRA OnDemand and a variant installed on your own servers) which affect the techniques which can be used for the integration.

Uses for the integration

When integrated with JIRA, you have a possibility to:

  • Configure your JIRA as a master repository of your issues. In this scenario you create and update your issues always in JIRA and the changes are pushed in real time to Testlab project.
  • Push issues from your JIRA to your Testlab project as requirements or stories, making it possible to design (a part) of your specification in your JIRA and include this part of the specification to Testlab’s requirement hierarchy to be tested.
  • Configure a true 2-way integration for issues, making it possible to edit issues in both systems and keep the issues in sync.

Different integration alternatives

The different integration alternatives introduced are described in detail in the following table.

Integration method (linked to further documentation) Available for Description
One-way integration for issues with WebHooks

JIRA OnDemand

JIRA on your own servers

  • Pushing issues from your JIRA to Testlab in real-time
  • Issues are always created in JIRA
  • Testlab’s UI makes it easy to jump between systems
  • Master repository for issues is JIRA
  • Issues are replicated to Testlab for real-time reporting
  • Supports integrating multiple JIRA projects to a single Testlab project
  • Can be configured in use directly from JIRA’s and Testlab’s UI
One-way integration for requirements with WebHooks

Jira OnDemand

JIRA on your own servers

  • Pushing issues* from your JIRA to Testlab as requirements and/or user stories in real-time
  • Stories are replicated to Testlab for real-time reporting
  • Supports integrating multiple JIRA projects to a single Testlab project
  • Can be configured in use directly from JIRA’s and Testlab’s UI
Two-way integration for issues with JIRA plugin  JIRA on your own servers only **
  • Synchronizing issues between JIRA and Testlab
  • Issues can be edited in both systems
  • Requires installation of “Testlab for JIRA” JIRA plugin
  • A single JIRA project can be integrated with a single Testlab project
  • For hosted Testlab, requires server side set up via a support ticket

* “issue” term here means any type of issue your JIRA is configured with (such as “Story”, “Task”, …)

** Atlassian forbids installation of custom JIRA plugins on OnDemand installations.
